A
Note From Mary

If
you’re like me, you’re busy driving your kids to
summer classes, camps and playdates. You’re
making sure they get bathed occasionally,
they’re getting enough sleep, and they are
eating well. You’re also probably working to
make memories for them through special
activities and trips, as well as treats such as
ice cream sundaes and popsicles.
As you’re busy making sure your kids have a
great summer, I urge you to make sure you have a
great one too. As you’re asking yourself, “What
do my kids need this summer?”, how about asking
yourself the same thing? What do you need this
summer in order to make it as special and
memorable as it can be? When you make sure your
needs are being met, you’ll be surprised at how
you’ll be able to meet your kids’ need too.
Whether it’s a regular time for a quiet walk, a
reunion with an old friend, or quiet time for
your summer reading, be sure to find the
time for it. Remember, we model for our children
24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If we expect them
to see to their own personal growth, they need
to see us doing the same.
As I wrote in The Mother Load: How to Meet
Your Own Needs While Caring for Your Family,
modeling for our children allows us to “show
them the benefits of growth rather than simply
talking about it. Action service instead of lip
service. The ‘do as I do, not just as I say’
style of mother leadership. Frankly, this is the
toughest type of mothering there is. Tough
because it requires us to lead by example.”
My hope for you this summer is that you’re able
to love by example. For it’s in our example that
we teach our children the most—and create summer
memories that will last a lifetime.

Sanity
Saver:
Consider doubling the recipes you make for your
family and freezing the leftovers so that you
have a “food reserve” you can access on summer
days when you’re too tired to cook or get home
later than usual after a full day of
activities.
