A Note From Mary

“That’s not fair!” I’m certain you’ve heard—or will hear—those words many times before your kids leave the nest. If you’re like me, you probably try to keep things as fair as possible.

I confess to making sure we spend about the same on each child and that each has the same number of gifts to open on
Christmas. When I split a soda between my two children, I try to do so evenly. But when it comes to other mothering matters, I’m discovering that being “fair” really isn’t fair at all--simply because the concept fails to recognize that different kids have different needs.

I have one child who’s an introvert and one who’s an extrovert. I have one child who needs more sleep than the other. I have one who is more interested in organized sports than the other. I have one who likes to wrestle and one who likes to sit quietly with me.  How fair would it be to treat these kids the same?

My resolution for 2006 is to meet my kids where they are, not to treat them “fairly” in the New Year. This requires taking the time to ask myself what each child needs—and to create a plan for providing it. If you’d like guidance regarding how to do this for your own family, be sure to read the details below about the upcoming “mominar” titled Developing a One-Page Mothering Plan for the New Year.

Remember, being “fair” often requires us to treat our children differently rather than the same. It seems counter-intuitive, but when you mother your kids the way they need to be mothered, rather than treating them “fairly,” you’ll find your Mother Load is lighter. And, more importantly, your children will benefit in the long run.

TeleSeminar

Join us January 19th for the “Developing a One-Page Mothering Plan for the New Year” TeleSeminar

Please note the date change!

During this call, you’ll learn:

  • About the power of focus
  • How lowering your expectations actually helps you be more effective
  • Why a one-page plan leads to peace of mind
  • What questions to ask to develop your own plan
  • How having a plan makes a difference in your mothering

In addition to the above, you’ll get a handout, complete with a sample “One-Page Mothering Plan.”

When you register, you’ll receive an e-mail with call-in information.

This Mominar will take place at
9:00 p.m. Eastern time; 8:00 Central; and 6:00 Pacific Time.  This teleseminar will last one (1) hour.

Cost: $15 to reserve your space on the call. (Please note that you may incur long-distance phone charges when you call in.  If you have a “free nights and weekends plan,” it’s a good idea to use it!)

If you’ve never participated in a teleseminar, here’s what to expect. You’ll call an assigned telephone number at the appointed time. You’ll be asked for your access code, which will be provided when you register. We’ll begin the Mominar promptly. During the teleseminar, moms across the country will be connected, live, as we discuss Developing a One-Page Mothering Plan for the New Year. You’ll have the opportunity to do some personal “homework” while we’re on the call, ask questions, and begin writing your own plan. When we’re done, it’s my hope that you’ll have a new sense of purpose as you look ahead to the New Year.

If you’d like the company of a friend on the call—and the benefit of an accountability partner for 2006—why not call a friend and ask her to register for the call as well? You’ll both benefit, and so will your kids!

 A Favor

One of my goals for 2006 is to increase the readership of this e-zine by 1,000 women. I know that the only way I’ll be able to do this is with your help. Would you do me a favor? Would you take a minute to think of a friend who would benefit from reading “Lightening the Mother Load” every month and forward this e-mail to her with a note encouraging her to read this month’s issue? I’d really appreciate your help!

Sanity Saver:

Get in the habit of asking, “May I think about it and get back with you?” when you are asked to do something. This will give you time to check your calendar and consider all of your other obligations before you take on a new assignment. Doing so is a great way to keep yourself---and your schedule---sane!
