A Note From Mary

Dear Fellow Mom,

The kids and I were at the pool a few weeks ago, dutifully applying our sunscreen. When my daughter needed help covering her back, I put my own lotion down to help her. Later that day, I couldn’t figure out why my face felt so hot. A look in the mirror showed a sunburn, however.

How did I get sunburned? I wondered. I put sunscreen on. Then I remembered my routine getting interrupted. Obviously, I had forgotten to finish applying my own sunscreen because I was busy applying my kids’. My son dubbed me “Mommy the Red-Nosed Reindeer.”

When a friend commented on my red face, I shared the story with her. She said, “That’s a perfect analogy for mothering. We’re so busy watching out for our children, we forget to watch out for ourselves!” She was right. Instead of being embarrassed over my sunscreen application failure, I decided to wear my red nose as a badge of honor.

What badges have you earned? I bet there have been plenty. Instead of being embarrassed over our failures, let’s band together and be proud of how we’re handling this tough job of motherhood. Red-nosed or not, I believe that all of us deeply desire to be good moms—and we’re doing the best we can in this regard. Instead of beating ourselves up over our “failures,” let’s start applauding ourselves for what we’re doing right each day. Doing so will not only make a difference for us, but for our children as well.

Strengthening families by encouraging moms,

It was my privilege to attend the Christian Booksellers Association meeting in Denver last month. What a treat to be able to meet with publishers and other authors! I made a new friend there, too. Her name is Cyndy Salzman and she’s written a great “Mommy Lit” book I want to recommend to you. It’s called Dying to Decorate and is a clever and memorable book--with recipes to boot. The recipes introduce each chapter and are cleverly woven into the story. I can't wait to try them! The story is intriguing, and I appreciated Cyndy's attention to historical detail. Cyndy’s currently working on the next installment in the series and I can't wait to read it!

Here’s what others say about Dying to Decorate:

“I devoured this book on a double plane ride home and it kept me entertained for hours. Fun story and enjoyable company on what would otherwise be a boring and lonely day. But what was really odd is that I suddenly want to throw a party just to try out some of those really cool recipes. And since I'd rather make a reservation than a recipe, that's really saying something…”

 --Sarah Sumpolec, Fredericksburg, Virginia

“Well written, I could SO relate to the characters, funny, yet insightful.......and GREAT recipes to boot! One of the best examples of Mom Lit I've seen.......not only dealing with the hassles of being a wife and mother and pet owner, but having a group of supportive friends with just the right touch on mystery/intrigue! Get it...read it....laugh and cry out loud!!!!!”

--Robin Miller, Little Rock, Arkansas

Sanity Saver:

If you have school-age children, start transitioning back to school hours NOW. It’s tough on everyone if you wait until school starts to return to earlier bed times and earlier wake-up times. Start getting your kids to bed a little earlier each night and up a little earlier each morning. This will make it easier once school starts. You’ll be subject to fewer tantrums and “melt-downs” along the way!
